Rebranding and Scalability

I responded to this question in the BCT thread, that coin and the rights to the name Dashcoin were acquired by the foundation prior to this announcement. So from that perspective we have the rights and even prior art. No "coin" suffix is being proposed though, Evan is considering calling the platform Dash - digital cash.
Noted, missed that post. But still think taking someone else's identity is a bad idea, and we should stand by the name we have and build on top of it.

You guys are more than able to try to find a more fitting name but given the exposure to existing logos for immediate recognition (stuck in the constraints of D-words), Dash seems appropriate for a few reasons:

1. It drops the coin aspect... it's a platform that not only functions as a currency but far more than that in terms of network attribution
2. Dash - Word play and mashup of Digital Cash
3. Dash - Synonymous with fast, speedy, quick--all appropriate for IX technology

Bringing up the discussion of Dash being a laundry detergent is as stupid as comparing Apple's brand to fruit. It's a name and what you do with that name that differentiates you.

deus coin

"Deus is Latin for "god" or "deity". Latin deus and dīvus "divine", are descended from Proto-Indo-European *deiwos, from the same root as *Dyēus, the reconstructed chief god of the Proto-Indo-European pantheon." ***Wikipedia

Yeah it has sure been a long debate and I truly believe Evan considered everyone's opinion long and hard before deciding to go a different route. I think the name can still be discussed but the decision of re-branding is really taken and I think we should support him. I truly believe is for the best and a lot of good things will come from this.

As I've said before I don't think a name change is going to make any quantifiable difference to adoption, but "Dash" is just... a bit crap.

100% behind dropping the "coin" bit though.

You know what Dash reminds me of? When they renamded XBMC to fucking "Kodi". It's like they took the first and worst name possible and stuck to their guns even though the community thought it was just terrible. A good name should be pretty much universally liked with a few exceptions. A name that people really resonates with them and clearly "dash" isn't it, can we stop suggesting it?

Ah yes, because "XBox Media Center" was appropriate to stick with after branching out beyond the Xbox platform. I love how you are suggesting universally liked when the community of crypto is so minute, it isn't even funny. How about polling normal citizens across various countries on their thoughts and feelings toward Darkcoin. Guarantee you (and saving you time, effort, and money in doing so) that Darkcoin wouldn't be universally liked. Again, you're more than welcome to put up a new name.

The coin should be dropped though, regardless. It's more than just a coin.

Yes and the learning channel (TLC) is all about learning with all the garbage reality shows they show on there. XBMC or not, Kodi is a fucking terrible name. Just horrible. Like Dash.

And your meaningful contribution for a new name is what exactly? It's easy to disregard it if you aren't contributing your own ideas. Further, if you actually looked at the reasons behind using the name "Dash" you would see it is fitting vs your Kodi example which doesn't represent anything other than changing a name for the sake of rebrand.

Curse my swing casino job, and it's associated weird sleeping schedule, but hold on, wait a minute....

YES!!!!!!

Congrats to Evan for taking this painful for some but necessary step to achieving our long term goal of competing with or possibly surpassing Bitcoin!

Even though it will render my PR efforts obsolete, my position on this subject has been clear, this is absolutely what needs to be done to achieve mass adoption for ALL of Darkcoin's merits.

Stop the press, I never thought this day would come, and I couldn't be happier.

About adoption you are wrong, Evan wouldn't do this in a vacuum just because it is a theorized problem. We have received direct comments from potential partners (existing crypto services, merchants, exchanges, etc) were they liked the technology, but would consider adding DRK only if the name is changed. So basically changing the name does not guarantee we will be added on several places but it does open the possibility.

That's to be expected. Hard to argue English language and connotations as being a major deterrent. Some of us that are for a rebrand actually want Darkcoin to succeed. And you know what success is... having the largest possible userbase. If a name prevents people (be it end users, merchants, service providers, etc) from using it, it's doing more harm than good. With all the technological innovations the team has provided in Darkcoin in such short order, limiting its success because of some misguided ideas surrounding the word "Dark" seems unfortunate (and something that can easily be prevented early on with a proper rebrand).

People need to suck up their pride and if they like the name so much, you can easily change the code yourself to still show Darkcoin. Maybe even add a hidden config setting called legacy mode for all the people deadset on being stuck in old ways. lulz.
