What's in a name? ...or, is a rose by any othername worth the trouble?

I am creating this thread to be a repository for the ongoing, and for some, annoying discussion of the Darkcoin name. It seems this subject comes up on a regular basis, resulting in a rehashing of old arguments, the opening of old wounds, and in general creating more heat than light. It is my hope that in the future, people wanting to discuss this issue can simply be pointed here to see what has already been discussed.

Before going further it needs to be recognized that this is not a democracy, nor should it be a shouting match. The decision to change--if it is ever made--will be made by Evan, and the board of directors of the foundation. It is my hope that they will find rational and polite input for their decision here.

To that end, I would suggest that we try not to repeat views that are already expressed here other than as needed to rebut, or rebut a rebuttal. The shorter this thread, the more likely it is to be useful to newbies reviewing the issue, and decision makers considering the options. I know that some on both sides are tired of debate, but I would ask that if you find the absence of an argument that you think important, please post it for consideration.

Peace to you all...

I would like to chime in by saying if we do eventually consider a name change, oblox's compounding of DIGITAL CASH into DASH is a brilliant idea...

DASH (DSH) is DIGITAL CASH, the currency of the Internet!

I would have to become the DASH CHAMELEON...

EDIT: I like the DASH DALMATIAN better!

Not only that, Dash by definition, is fast--would also play off instantx as well as be able to use the existing D logos and the likes.

I think that if we official foundation of darkcoin and darkcoin foundation members want the name change it should be done after InstantX implementation with info couple of months before that there will be the name change...if so...

Darkcoin is feature wise, community wise and market capitalization wise amongst the top 10 of ALL coins for quite a while now, and it's one of the youngest of them.

It got there _with_ the name "Darkcoin".

Think about it.
Yes, it has gotten far, but I agree the potential would be so much more with a mainstream-friendly name. Makes it easier to sell...we are not just a "Dark" coin anymore, we are going to be THE most advanced coin there is, and our branding should reflect that, IMHO.

True, but by all accounts a $10 million dollar market cap is nothing in the grand scheme of things, let alone factoring all the potential end users out there. Just because it got there in crypto land, doesn't mean it will make it to large user adoption keeping the name as is.

Don't get me wrong, the exposure is great and the brand established in crypto is bar none, but it's peanuts to compare to brands globally and the average person, who already doesn't understand bitcoin as is, will have a tough enough time using something that has negative connotations associated with it. We can keep the name as is for all I am concerned, but know that the likelihood of mainstream adoption with it (along with far larger investors) is off the table, or at least slim at best. By keeping the name, I think you're limited to focusing on markets like the underground black markets, gambling, and porn. Which, in and of itself, is a large enough market anyway. Keeping the name as is means focusing attention to getting those three markets to use it. Trying to push for mainstream adoption with the name as is seems like a fruitless effort, but by all means, burn resources trying.

This exactly. With a name like DASH, our coin could be adopted anywhere, including Dark markets and such. Why handcuff ourselves by keeping a restrictive name? Let's give ourselves a chance to be something more, and realize the full potential of our Dark, AND Fast coin. This isn't your dad's Darkcoin anymore!

The logos might not be a problem but what about the source code, websites and everything else. Not sure if Evan would want to take this hurdle since the name of the coin was already changed once 11 months ago:

https://github.com/darkcoin/darkcoin/commit/fff17db9800c9f3f92485fb674fd289e6790c919
Source code is a find-and-replace sort of deal (much like what happened when it went from XCoin to Darkcoin or how we are currently replacing all the Bitcoin text in the 0.9 branch). Websites would have their domains forwarded to the new appropriate link. The foundation would have to file paperwork to name change but in the grand scheme of things, if the direction really was to rebrand, it wouldn't be the end of the world.

I've already said my peace, I'm not going to push the issue any farther than it already has been. I've made my points--Evan, the team, the foundation, etc, can all evaluate pros and cons in moving forward. As I said, I am fine with Darkcoin's name as is if people realize that mainstream will not adopt it and resources aren't wasted on pursuing it. I implore the foundation and team to consult with a marketing firm as to which one would have the better outcome. I think you already know the answer.

What started as a privacy-centric coin has turned (and is turning) into something so much more. I don't think anyone at the beginning of the project imagined we would be where we are in such short order. I've already asked friends and family about investing and adopting Darkcoin and hands down the first question asked is, am I doing something illegal? I certainly am not the only one that has had this happen to. And that's just a small sample size. Surely, you will have people more receptive but I think you are completely disregarding the overwhelming majority by sticking to your guns and not looking at the larger picture.

suggest dressing up the darkcoin name into flowery star trek techno babble and then noone will be any the wiser. Thus preserving the best of both worlds.
