Let's talk branding

Hey everyone, I think with the current size that this project is growing to, we are in dire need to talk branding.

We are attending conferences (giving out promotional material), building websites, building out evolution etc and our current branding is no where up to standard. The colours clash, fonts aren't elegant and the logo could do with a bit of sharpening.

I think it would make a lot of sense to get a professional in to do the branding now while we are in our early days. Ethereum used Proof of Work, who in my opinion did a great job. Here is a report of the work that Proof of Work did for them http://proofofwork.media/project/ethereum/
We obviously don't have to use them but I just wanted to provide an example of a company providing this service for a blockchain network.

I would be interested in hearing everyone's opinions on this. You obviously know mine ;)

One of the really smart things about the ethereum branding is that the ethereum symbol can be rendered in so many different ways, there is always the same shape, but it kind of embraces the absence of a color scheme. What better way to visually show that ethereum can be everywhere, for everyone, than to be able to render the logo in a translucent or other creative way against practically any backdrop?

I'm not sure how open everyone would be to re-evaluating the Dash branding (didn't we just go through this not too long ago, and even now with Evolution?), but we'll see.

i agree
we went through so many rebounding and brandings over the last years, we are finally on a "steady" light version (moved away from the Dark Blue over the last 6 month), and i would let that run for now until we have a 'good' reason to change (Evo and such)
sorry i know i am always the 'party pooper' holding back any rebranding adventures, but i think we are the 1st time ever on 1 Corporate Identity (like it or not)
and we should stick with that for now, and reevaluate in some month when Evo comes closer

I agree here, although I would also point out if anyone is a graphic artist, you can go wild and render the DASH logo, or other things to represent DASH in your own creative ways. It doesn't have to be part of the 'official' branding for it to still be able to look really cool and help attract people. We have already had some great graphic artists making things for DASH, so even if the consensus here turns out to be to not change the branding right now, don't let it stifle your creative juices. I mean, Tao's "Dash dalmation" isn't the Dash brand but in my opinion the thing is freaking iconic. Make something good, use it and it might stick :)

I don't have a problem with the corporate identity, I just have a problem with the graphic design and I mean no offense to whomever did the job. It got us to where we are today but it is not the professional and elegant style that we should be taking into the next phase.
I can definitely see where you are coming from but the problem with leaving it until later is that it will become a larger burden as we will already have promotional material, websites, evolution etc and all of these will need to be redesigned to suit our identity. Why do you think this should be done later? If it needs to be done then what advantage do we have by waiting?

graphic design - can u specify please

well waiting vs doing it now
we just have a ton of other things to do , and as everything is on track now (visually) I would let it run until we have a "good reason" to change all again (Evo launch and the likes)
and please remember , whatever we have or will come next will never please everybody ! I would have done this as well in a different way , but we voted this logo / corporate identity in back last year - and a vote is a vote
specially with graphics and visual approaches there are a ton of opinions , styles , ideas,.... out there (I have them too) but we have to look at the bigger picture and a "constant " corporate identity (everywhere the same) is the most important for now . we are still on the edge of getting out of Darkcoin and are making great progress with getting Dash in the heads and minds (+ eyes) or customers and Newcommers .

I suggest holding off with this for some months and pick up the conversation than again

have to stick to the corporate identity

Thanks for replying.

In terms of specifying what I mean by Graphic design, I mean our color scheme, font's and logo refinement. These things help give us an image that leaves an impression, which leaves people wanting to be associated with the brand.

Color: In terms of color schemes, I am not suggesting that we move away from our colors completely, I would however suggest that we get a professional to come in and adjust the colors slightly so that they actually work together.

Fonts: I am not a specialist with typography but I know that they could find something that would suit our corporate image perfectly. I don't really have anything against our current font but would like to see what a professional design agency could come up with.

Logo: I am not suggesting anything crazy with this either but just a refined logo that is done by a professional agency.

I know we have a lot going on but that is why you hire a professional agency to do the work. There is never going to be down time with Dash, it is only going to get busier.

Ethereum has done an amazing job with giving of an elegant professional look.
Wouldn't you want promotional material that looks like this?

and t-shirts that look like this?

or logo's like this?

Those are some sweet materials. How much would a design firm cost, approximately?

I am newbie.

And I feel the K.I.S.S. philosophy works quite well.
Four letter words... even better.

I am Not a linguist.
No clue how DASH translates to other languages, yet to me, DASH would connotate quick, fast, and in a hurry... A sprint...
Whereas, the intent was an acronym for Digital Cash... from what I can tell.

Perhaps when translated, it may mean something different, in one of the many languages spoken on our planet.
What could be done ? How could this simple concept be improved with branding ?

Chevrolet marketed a 'Nova' automobile, which was quite good, yet in the Hispanic world, the definition of 'no va' would mean, "Doesn't go" !
Bad choice for an automobile name !

Ethereum sounds Kool, to me, yet it's a 4 syllable word, probably construed from Latin, and will be hacked in pronunciation by many.
I'm not sure how to describe their pyramid over an inverted pyramid, yet it is a neato symbol...
Does it entail any specific meaning ? Do people Really need to interpret some graphic object, or even discuss it ?

Tos uses a dalmation, all well and good. There's already a dogecoin... is that an alsatian they use ?

What sort of artwork would you have in mind that you feel would be superior to the straight forward use of a four letter word ?

Best

got it / understood
you re talking about the corporate identity

rebranding is rebranding , even if we keep the same name , hiering the agency is the smallest part of that
redesigning everything we have is the biggest (new wallets , new mobile apps , pages , webpages , PR martial, videos and guides .... ) part

Oh right, got you too. I didn't realize that I made it sound like I wanted to change the name etc. I guess I could have phrased it better, sorry for causing confusion.

Yes, redesigning everything is the biggest, I agree, but it only gets bigger the longer we leave it. We will only have more promotional material, more wallets, more videos and more webpages in the future. I think we are going to have to do it at some point so don't you think that the best time to do it is now while it is not too big of a job?

the blue and Dash is well established (I am not a fan of the blue ether but that is not the point)
it is about brand awareness and recognition in our market , and as we went though several new colors and branding I suggest to ride this out longer and not change again

(how often did we change graphics since Feb 2014 ?)

there is no rush with this "the longer we wait the more pages we have" (we will have a couple of more pages in some month - no biggi)

the hardest in corporate identity is to stick with it, if you like it or not , changing graphics because of different opinions and styles is always the "easiest" but you will kill your brands awareness in the market .
there are enough people out there who still see Dashcoin and whatever else confusions , even DRK still hangs on our tail ....

just my 2 duffs

I can see your point and I agree with you that the blue in dash is well established. I do not want to change from blue, it all just needs to be refined so that the colors complement each other properly and look a little more elegant and professional.

Here is what Dash currently looks like

Here is what I am suggesting we need to look more like

As you can see they are still using the same colors but one looks like it has been thrown together by a kid using a program like Paint and the other looks like it has been thrown together by a professional using Photoshop and Indesign.

I am not suggesting anything more drastic than this.

ok we are coming closer i guess
so it is about colors ?
(why is all Eth corporate Identity posted above then ? bit confusing , right )

Haha, yes, we are definitely coming closer.

It's not about Blue, Red, White. It's about the way that they have been used. As I said above, we currently look like our identity has come from a kid using paint, rather than a professional using indesign and photoshop.

The Ethereum stuff was just an example of how using a good professional graphic design agency can highlight your identity. Stick to who we are but just highlight it by using a professional design agency.

Edit: forgot to quote ya, so here's alert @tungfa
