Jabber/ ICQ

How "secure" are these ? Can you put them on usb ? Do they run with tails/linux ? Just curious..Maybe someone has a better way than what I've been trying to come up with.

It can be extremely safe if you use the Off-The-Record protocol (don't confuse with GChat off the record, that is rubbish). You need to use a local client for it (you can use Pidgin in Windows/Linux or Adium in Mac).

Here you have a great scorecard of messaging options and security prepared by the Electronic Frontier Foundation for reference:

Yep, I fully sign fernando s post. Use Jabber (not ICQ!) with OTR and you are using ahead-of-time technology :)

no kidding!

It seems like theres no "easy" way to setup Jabber ... any good ways to do this and still stay secure? Also does anyone want to start a PGP thread for practice?

Oh it's so damn easy, you must have overseen it :)

Download pidgin or any XMPP-capable chat client (really any client will do). Register with any XMPP server you like https://list.jabber.at/ (any server will do, registration will work from inside pidgin). Install pidgin-otr (or any OTR plugin for your favourite messanger) and follow the GUI instructions to generate keys. There is really nothing you need to worry about. It's so easy.

Edit. Screenshots-How-To:

1. Install Pidgin and OTR plugin

Now add me [email protected] and start having private, end-to-end-encrypted, off-the-records conversations. Isnt that easy? 10 Minutes max!
