Is the Dash Core Team incorporated?

I'm a little confused about the who's who and what's what of Dash organization.

Who or what exactly pays Ryan Taylor's (Director of Finance) salary?

Hey Jim! it is normal you are confused because Dash is a really innovative project and the structure and payments are different from other projects around.

You can see some of the people in the project here:
https://www.dash.org/team

All salaries in the team are paid from different proposals put to the masternodes to vote each month. If the masternodes voted against, any of the people in that proposal would get paid. The salaries proposals are usually split by areas so it is not a big huge one and masternodes can see the split between projects/areas. In each of those salaries proposal there are several people included. Details of individual payments are not public. You can see details on one of those proposals here:
https://www.dashcentral.org/p/crdev-development-201703
(btw, Ryan gets paid from that one and so do I)

However, that is not all. Anyone can make a proposal and, if the masternodes vote it, get paid to do whatever is being proposed. In this article you can read about three successful community projects that are funded this way:

I think what you guys are doing is absolutely fantastic, and crazy innovative. Thanks for the clarification -- I'm sure all the issues you have to deal with are fast moving targets that have to be hit while juggling chainsaws and dinner plates.

I have some questions about accounting and accountability -- questions that I'm sure others will have sooner or later.

Is this the appropriate place and time to ask these questions? I totally trust the people who are leading the Dash project and I don't want anyone to feel defensive from what might be some pointed questions. I just want to have a clear understanding of how things are done.

Yeah, ask whatever you want.

Re accounting and accountability in general, there is really nothing in the protocol yet. Proposal owners are encouraged to report periodically in the forum about their progress and how they are spending the money they receive, but if they don't do it the only measure masternodes have is to downvote that proposal (if it is a multimonth one) or not vote in favor of future proposals by that owner/team.

The team has established some internal procedures to ensure that there is uniformity and processes in place for its proposals. @babygiraffe (Ryan Taylor) usually makes the proposal, controls the funds and keeps the books. He then works with projects owners to make the payments and ensure that the funds are used for their intended purpose. He publishes monthly reports on the finances of the team in the announcements subforum:
https://www.dash.org/forum/topic/official-announcements.54/

There you can also find the monthly report on activity that @kot (Robert Weicko, project manager) publishes. There is also the updates on specific projects that are published in the project updates subforum:
https://www.dash.org/forum/topic/project-updates.123/

That one doesn't admit replies because it is intended to be a quick way to get info without getting lost in long threads.

If you need more specific information you can ask whoever is responsible of that project, preferably in the forum. However, bear in mind that answering everything everywhere takes a lot of time and people need to be working, so sometimes things can't get answered in a timely manner.

Oh, and there is also the quarterly community call with the team that is open to anyone. The last one was a week ago. Anyone can join. They are announced on all Dash outlets and you can submit questions in advance. In the announcements forum you have threads for the latest ones.

Excellent! Thanks @fernando, this answers several questions for me.

Which brings me back to my initial question. If Ryan is operating Babygiraffe & Co. as a sole proprietorship, isn't he taking on a significant personal liability risk? Arguably a malicious prosecutor (or any civil litigation lawyer) could go after him and his assets (the @babygiraffe private keys) as a co-conspirator/facilitator for just about anything that is done with Dash (drug deals, solicitation, etc.). This would be very bad for Ryan, but it would also be bad for the Dash project.

I think that risk is very reduced (at least the prosecution part because of something done with Dash that is not connected with him), but we are looking into alternatives. Most people in the team sign a contract here or there... or interacts with contractors... in
the end there is always a risk, especially for those of us who have attached our real name to the project. I think those risks are not really substantial, but we work on ways to reduce them.

Right on -- thank you very much for taking the time respond to my query. I'm in the process of reading through all the Official Announcements to get a good understanding of the development of the Dash project. I'm very pleased by what I am learning and I think you guys are doing a terrific job.

What I see is a process of formalization -- a transition from volunteer hobby to professional enterprise. It's a very interesting process, especially in this extraordinary context of open source software development rooted in an anarcho/libertarian/crypto culture.

Keep up the good work! I look forward, at some point, to making my own contribution to the project
