Masternode Monitoring

Hi,

Does anyone know whether there are any solutions to monitor masternodes (not the OS itself)?

I heard of a RPC-interface binding to the loopback interface. Is there any (good) documentation about how to access and use it? I don't want to dig through the source code for that.
I would like to write some kind of watchdog or plugin for an existing solution reporting to a monitoring server so I can get notified via SMS when something is wrong.
