A masternode is merely DASH software running on a (preferrably) Linux server. The guides drag you through a lot of blind stuff with no understanding or explanation, but a distinction should be made for you to become competent and maintain a server that is a benefit to the DASH network. Which of those meaningless commands have nothing at all to do with DASH? Which ones do? Knowing the difference, and actually understanding what's going on, will eliminate a lot of hesitation and questions that hold you up.
