Is it getting stuck at the same block? If I were you, I'd go the bootstrap route. Won't explain why the hang but should at least get you fully synced to the current blockheight on the right blockchain.

Did you delete your peers.dat to get a fresh list? You could also sync from bootstrap.

The biggest issue I have is the forking by dividing the network between masternodes on Tor and those that aren't. There has to be a way to unify things, from a standpoint of holistic mixing between the two as well as election for payment.

Maybe this was addressed in here, but wouldn't there be potential forking issues if some of the masternode network was on clearnet and the remainder on tor/i2p (as a result of not being able to see each other/miners selecting winners)? It would either be an all or none for the network, right?

Not directly as the S1 does SHA256 while DRK is X11. You could always mine on a SHA256 multipool that pays out in DRK.
