I had always been a Windows user. I still remember when it was started from MS-DOS (yes, I am that old!). A few years ago I started to play with Linux installing it on virtual machines or using live CDs. I liked it, but I was afraid to switch because I felt that I was gonna have a lot of trouble. A few weeks ago I finally did it and I can't be happier. The first thing I did was to install a virtual machine with Windows because I thought I was gonna need it frequently... I've only started it once to let someone else use PowerPoint (Libre Office was breaking the format in his presentation).
Take it easy and do your research, but chances are you can switch without a lot of troubles if you plan ahead.
