Pre-Proposal Discussion?: Branding Colors

Okay so in an effort to be polite and straight forward with this new re-design I also wanted to know what peoples thoughts were on the current color schema we have going on for the Dash Branding:

The Current Style Guide:
“Strong blue”
RGB: 28, 117, 188
CMYK: 85.1, 37.8, 0, 26.3
Hex: #1c75bc

“Vivid red”
RGB: 236, 34, 39
CMYK: 0, 99, 97, 0
Hex: #ec2227

I'm not sure who came up with this brand, but to be quite honest, red blue are so clashy and make a very horrible color scheme as shown in the nav section of the forums. red/white/blue only work on the american flag.

So I propose we change out the red for a 1: dark grey or 2: lighter blue or 3: darker blue

I do not think this is such a massive change that we start pointing out how much work the last re-branding was or whatever else.

All it would require is a change to the promotional graphics page and the style guide.

All the rest would fall into place over time. Just having to stare at these hideous red lines has gotta stop!

Proposed colors with the current colors:

Personally I would leave it as is for now (new colors mean a lot of changes on websites, templates etc...) In about a year or little more, we will (probably) have a new colors connected to Evolution releases - this might be a better time for color changes

[QUOTE="red/white/blue only work on the american flag/QUOTE]

One would begin to differ my colonial chum it works just fine on the union flag too so no tea and crumpets for you today!

Also the French will be shrugging in a very unimpressed way at this news too.

Not loving the red personally. It's very jarring to the eye. The old site was easy to look at, this site not so much.

The red on the menu and red slash in the header title do nothing but distract my eyes. It's so bad I'd venture to say "hideous".

I'm not terribly in love with the red either, or the blue for that matter. The hues are extremely outdated. I think we can do much much better.
More important is how pressing this is on our list of priorities. We should definitely start experimenting with mockups, but we realistic and
aligned with the development roadmap. Any change has a dramatic effect on our branding, and the workload is quite steep

I will happily replace every single current image's red with the new color. All by myself, can we stop worrying about the workload now and just find a different color to replace this fugly red with? I'm getting a headache just looking at it.

Actually I was quite happy with the colours directly after the re-branding from Darkcoin to Dash. It looked much more harmonic and less bubble-gum.

I do not agree with this line of action. I don't like it myself, but I might not like the new scheme better. In any case, it's not up for me to decide. Our rebrand was a fabulous example of community engagement and consensus achievement through direct vote.

Any minute change in a color scheme has very serious implications. Thousands of documents have been produced and presentations made all over the place. Videos have been produced and published online. Conferences have been made. Interviews and news outlets have used them. It simply does not look good (quite the opposite, extremely unprofessional) to flip-flop our corporate image just like that.

I don't like these colours but they're totally secondary at this point in time. We're not a supermarket product where colour is such a detrimental feature for market adoption.

Trust me on this, I am a colour specialist. And when I mean a colour specialist, I mean I am an extreme color specialist in my day job.
It is a fabulous idea, I love it. I just propose it be done right and in a professional manner.

And sure, we can start right now

We'll having a decision made and put in the roadmap might be a step #1 no?

I'm all for doing it the right way, noone said this was a CHANGE IT RIGHT NOW type situation, I just want to begin doing something about it before my head implodes.

@yidakee I have zero memory of seeing a red line under the menu on the old site. It IS a simple process to remove the red, a process that will have very little to do with the brand. It's probably a style var in the admin panel of this site and would take 30 seconds to update.

This is only a line under a menu, I really don't think letterhead needs updating.

Well, it goes hand in hand with the Evo prototype presented months ago.

The old forum was made at super flash speed when the rebrand happened. We had to urgently move with the name change. We barely had time to discuss anything but the actual name change. The original blue was included with the change. But then, development went on. No one has ever mentioned this until now. This is a completely new forum design, yes, but the red it not something out of the blue (pun intended). It's part of out identity, so with the new forum it was the logical thing to do I guess

But I for one am all for a future change.

You guys want to see some red/white/blue color schemes? Cause they look nothing like this. Red is only used as a CTA, not as an accent color. And our Red is a horrible choice of red, it's too 'vivid' and is always improperly used so we should make an effort to correct this.

Examples:

Here's an even heavier usage of red (republicans just love red lol):

Are any of the above reds a "vivid red" or are they all washed out like they should be? Point is, our colors are atrocious. We should fix them.

So the red bar under the menu is getting at you, you absolutely hate it, it's horrible, it's atrocious and giving you a headache. Fair enough, I totally get how that can happen.

I would expect the colour difference between the vivid red detail under the menu vs. the slash in the forum title image (even more vibrant and vivid) to make you completely mental. Luckily it's not. Any designer would legitimately have a fit with that desecrating, blasphemous and amateurish work... How on earth we can have those two completely distinct hues is beyond me. Our webmaster must a complete idiot. Maybe he's doing it on purpose to harm our image? He should be sacked immediately, his incompetence is intolerable!

But it's the headache I'm worried about. There could be something seriously bad with your health. Some forms of aneurisms can manifest themselves in that exact manner when the visual cortex get compromised.

I would advise a green filter. Something like this will instantly fix the issue until we figure this colour scheme sacrilege out. This will filter out all red tones for you and hopefully give you some comfort.

I would also suggest a CAT scan, if not a full blown MRI - but I'm no doctor. In any case dude, seriously, if it persists, please look into it.

This guy found that the colours of M&M's caused him migraines.

Colours are nothing more than radiation. And the fingerprint of a colour is it's spectral composition. It could be that this specific colour does not agree with the L-cone photoreceptors in your retina causing hyper-sensitivity.

Here is a paper on it.

Headache symptoms and headache triggers were investigated in migraine and control groups in 2 separate experiments. In one experiment, we also determined, for each participant, pattern glare, whether it was reduced by colored filters and, if so, what the optimum color of filter was. Color vision was also assessed with the D15 test.

I would suggest you visit a neurologist for a check-up. He can run tests to get to the bottom of it.

@yidakee I'm not a color or gui guy in any way but I agree with @Jeztah and would personally prefer this

For those who are using Stylebot ;)
Code:
.navTabs {
    border-bottom: none;
}

Personally, I like our red. It is very alive / vivid and this is a thing a really like about it :).
It makes a real distinction among other corporate colors.

Honestly, and yes I'm sure this makes me some sort of philistine of the highest order, I don't care about the colour scheme one iota. I can't recall ever having giving the issue a single flicker of thought on any Web page I've ever visited. It's the content that keeps me there or makes me pass on to the next site.

Like I said this probably makes me a philistine but I expect I'm not alone in that fact So do I for my part want a red white blue or magenta orange beige colour scheme? I really don't care as long as the content is there and readable but then I've never experienced a headache caused by looking at a particular hue so what do I know?

I also like it in wallet design and for presentation materials but not the way it looks here. Not sure why. I think it could be because in wallet it's a red line surrounded by blue regions, in presentation it's red line surrounded by white spaces but here it's red line between blue and white regions and maybe this makes it stand out too much for me.

@methusaleh you'd be amazed how much money is poured into the colour choice alone for logos and coorporate/marketing.

You may think you dont give one iota, but I absolutely guarantee you it has a very deep unconscious response, and this is where te emotional response live.

Business is conducted in the rational conscious, but decision making is 100% unconscious (when you sign a document, decide yes/no to something etc)

@kot @UdjinM6 ... I'm by no means a designer, I just understand colours at a very technical level. I do talk daily with dozens of top level agencies and designers, so I'm always confronted with the latest tendencies. I just think this color scheme is a bit dated and uninteresting. I think we could make an effort for Evo to look modern since we have lots of time to discuss it

Evo launch might be a perfect time for change (as mentioned in my firs post here)
