Have experience with both mining and masternode-ing? Care to share?

I'm seeking input from people who've both mined (any coin) and have at least one masternode. Specifically, I'm seeking a comparison of the costs/profits of mining, versus the costs/profits of masternode-ing.

The goal is to inform potential investors already familiar with mining about adding masternodes to their portfolio: startup costs, maintenance costs, profits, and chances of obsolescence being key for them.
