Makes a lot of sense, a modern grid needs digital coms to run efficiently so might as well give them plenty of bandwidth and get in on the carrier business at the same time, should end up going all the way out to domestic connections so smart meters provide both electricity and internet.

Do the power companies have any part in that? That kind of network could be extremely beneficial to power companies but that doesn't necessarily mean they'd be cooperative.
