Separating the crptograph from the coin

Been thinking about this for a while but don't really know enough about the inner workings to develop on it so any thoughts appreciated.

At the mo we have a variety of blockchains and hashing methods, all very useful and innovative but an awful lot of duplication of effort. Going forward I'd imagine that duplication would be targeted and instead of new chains with their own miners the layers would split into miners as a service and blockchains using them, a core of global cryptographic security networks with any kind of service plugged into them.

Short term I'd imagine a coin that can use a variety of hashing methods simultaneously with the difficulty of each method adjusting accordingly and efficiency dictating which method survives, maybe some methods offering faster times or greater security and new coins/requirements using those same same hashing methods in a merge-mining kind of way. Is that even possible?
