It May Be Tax Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe src=\"\/\/players.brightcove.net\/2111767321001\/default_default\/?videoId=5721804818001\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Bitcoin is on a roll, with the price of one of the virtual coins up more than 17% against the dollar in just one day. On Friday morning it climbed back up above $8,000 for the first time in two weeks, with an $8,050 value at the time of writing.<\/p>\n<p>Why? As ever, the causes of the cryptocurrency\u2019s fortunes are less than clear, but some experts reckon it might have something to do with the approach of April 17, the deadline for filing taxes in the U.S. Others think it\u2019s a function of geopolitical fears and sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>The tax day theory goes like this: people needed to liquidate their bitcoin assets before the deadline in order to have enough dollars to pay their taxes; most have done this now, so goodbye sell-off.<\/p>\n<p>This interpretation is supported by the fact that Bitcoin suddenly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/04\/09\/bitcoin-tanks-below-7000-down-6-percent-in-two-hours.html\">tanked at the start of this week<\/a>, losing 6% of its value in just two hours and falling below $7,000.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe selling pressure associated with tax day has subsided right now,\u201d Ryan Taylor, the CEO of cryptocurrency software firm Dash Core\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2018\/04\/12\/technology\/bitcoin-rally-tax-day\/\">told CNN<\/a>. \u201cAs people get their tax returns, there may be new money entering the market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, when Bitcoin suddenly shot up on Thursday, the online chatter was mostly about the White House\u2019s military threats against Russia in Syria, its sanctions on Russia and its tariffs on China, with people\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fxstreet.com\/analysis\/bitcoin-and-airline-shares-take-to-the-skies-201804121331\">speculating<\/a>\u00a0that Russians and Chinese might be buying into Bitcoin to quietly get their money out of those countries.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, both theories could be valid.
