Sub-Ether is a mega big movie fan and has watched 1000's in his life and is always looking for the next best thing in kick ass thrilling home entertainment(does not do slow romantic comedies!)
And while movies like the Abyss, Terminator and 12 monkeys are all great in their own right, they are not what one would call far outside of the mainstream Hollywood freeway.
For example in South America, 'City of God' and 'the devil's backbone' would be on the already watched list.
So does anyone want to add to this list?
Any feedback and all additions appreciated :D ...

P.S. If this results in a good night of movie watching, Sub-Ether may even send a tip to someone, but be warned it will not be easy and is probably not an obvious choice.

So here goes for starters :-

    1) O Homem Do Ano (Man of the Year) : violent action from South America, if you enjoyed City of God, try this.

    2) La Cabina - forgotten Spanish short horror story from 1972.

    3) Children of Men : Apocalyptic flick about a world were all the females are infertile and society has broken down.

    4) Livide : when the French make spooky horror, this is the result.

    5) Sin Nombre (without a name): A dangerous train journey of people trafficking and gang war fare through latin America and the Mexico.

    6) Nuit Blanche (Sleepless Night) : French none stop action thriller- guaranteed not to fall asleep in this one!

    7) Ravenous : Gory horror with Robert Carlyle at his best.
    https://youtu.be/JO98NMMgp0Y

    8) Spider Forest : Surreal atmospheric Korean horror
    https://youtu.be/GfhqCydgmQc

    9) From Beyond : No list is complete without at least 1 classic 80's gorefest over the top horror.
This is an excellent HP lovecraft story and has Jeffrey Combs in it, what more could you want?
    https://youtu.be/5kENuvJ2MIA

    10) Black Sheep : with a trailer like this, and class lines such as 'The Sheep are revolting ', how could you possibly not enjoy it!

It would certainly help when you would post a list of what you've already watched...

What, all of them?! lol. Am not sure I could remember all the names, but there is an awful lot of mediocre average dross out there. I wrote down a list of about 30 I'd seen in last year or 2 for this thread and figured I'd put down a few more if there was any interest :) ...

Interesting thoughtful selection, have not seen any of them, Citizen four sounds like my kind of thing, and have read (but understood with limited success, lol) some Stephen Hawking in the past, hes one smart cookie.

I refused to watch the Hollywood version of girl with a Dragon Tattoo, because it was already a seminal piece and should have been left alone(and same with Total Recall!)
For Sweden I suggest 'Easy Money' http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1291652
And James bond-esk 'Hamilton in the interest of the nation' http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1856014/

I hated the Hollywood version. the whole mystery around the death of the author had me intreged and that he was working on a fourth book.

This is sort of similar to the girl with the dragon tattoo in some ways but with a more damaged anti-hero...

+1 on Werner Herzog's documentaries, and especially Lessons of Darkness (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104706/). Try to watch it on a projector if you can, the images are extremely mesmerizing (feels sort of like the real-life version of LotR's Mountain of Doom).

Because someone said 12 Monkeys: If you can get it, try to watch La Jetée (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056119/), which is the original version of this story. It's very very different though.

On the subject of documentaries Shoah (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090015/) is a must-see. If you have a (really long) weekend to spare, you can combine it with Leni Riefenstahl's Olympia films (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0030522/ and http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0030523/), and top it off with http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076147/. This one could be quite hard to find, and you need some working knowledge about the subject matter to make sense of it, but it's really worth it.

Here's some of my favourite Hollywood Classics if you find the above to tedious:

    - The Appartment (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053604/)
    - Sunset Boulevard (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0043014/)
    - The Fugitive (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106977/)
    - Opening Night (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079672/)
    - The Wild Bunch (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065214/)
    - Network (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074958/) (this one especially might be popular with the crowd here)
    - The Manchurian Candidate (www.imdb.com/title/tt0056218/) (waay better than the remake)

This one was truly hilarious! If you like this sort of thing, you should definitely watch The Boondocks (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0373732/). But I guess you already have :)

Definitely covered for now thanks! and yes am into the occasional music documentary and love dub reggae, going to start with your Dub Echoes tip

Australian cinema seemed to die off after such classics as Mad Max,Walkabout and Razorback during the boom times but has had a rebirth and some of the crime thrillers and horrors are excellent, and there are kick ass Mexican movies that never even get a single showing in our way too Hollywood main stream cinemas in the UK.

Don't forget Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109045/). You don't see Hugo Weaving like that every day :)

Haha, I remember that one, Hugo Weaving has just been in a fairly cool Australian flick called the 'The Mule' as well.

I'm sure you guys have seen "Lars and the Real Girl": http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0805564/ Just hilarious.

I think I met "Lars" the other day.... A friend and I were at a coffee shop and we met this old guy.. He said he owned a few antique cars so we told him we wanted to see if that was true. He left the coffee shop, then came back a few minutes later with a Ford antique car that looked quite nice and shiny... And sitting next to him was his gf who couldn't talk... LOL..
