Why doesn't all those smart people sitting around just hack phones instead of going public and taking on Apple. You have to think what the real reason is behind all because it isn't terrorism or child porn. Money! money! Money! They need more of it, they need to control the flow of money and get a cut of things. No different to a mob.
 
I suspect the answer is going to come down to how do we create a system where the encryption is as strong as possible, the key is as secure as possible, it is accessible by the smallest number of people possible for a subset of issues that we agree are important.

If nothing else, he is very consistent in his ideology. Who is the "we" above? As always, the government. Never fails to surprise me how much he absolutely despises corporatism.

...law enforcement can appear at your doorstep and say we have a warrant to search your home and they can go into your bedroom and into your drawers and rifle through your underwear to see if there's any evidence of wrong doing.
So if your argument is strong encryption no matter what...that I think does not strike the kind of balance that we have lived with for 200-300 years

This is such a misleading comparison. He said it himself: law enforcement had to physically "appear at your doorstep." That means a lot of money and resources were spent in effort to do the rifling through said underwear drawers. How much effort is spent pressing a button to remotely rifle through anyone's phone (minds)?

The scary thing is that there won't even be the effort of a button push. The number-cruncher sifting though your past 20 years of online history will automatically determine whether you're a criminal or potential criminal or not (pre-crime, anyone?) based on whatever definitions suit the current few guys in power.
It is not supposed to be easy to take complete authoritarian control over society. Try taking away all guns from Americans and see what happens.
