Just to show how #6 looks in different colors: http://imgur.com/a/jvVpL

The simple D would stand out on exchanges etc. as shown in the example below. If we go with a 'standard' coin design it will be hard to differentiate DRK from other coins based on looks.

Nice ! Ok maybe it's crazy but @LimLims why not use all those color variations like @NameUser proposed or at least some of them. I can imagine t-shirts with those different logos. The D is recognizable enough.

Updated my old file with the new design...

Hellllll yess!!!! Beautiful! LOVE IT! :D

My point is that's irrelevant, so why not keep the original design as the guy made/conceived it, moreover, if the argument is to change the colors just to change the perception about the coin it's useless. We are wasting time on something irrelevant : without a definite logo the marketing is on pause. Do.You. Understand ?
Do. You. Understand. Your. Own. Punctuation. You sound as dumb as you look.

@Kai Agreed. @LimLims Could you include a set of colors and include other variations of #6 - like the one Enzwell posted for instance?

I was thinking about how the D looks a bit too wide. The more I look at the picture posted by @godzirra, the more it looks a bit like a duck. Does it look better if it was skewed a bit like shown below? It would scale better and appear larger than when it's widened as in the original. I think... Also, I like the way @Enzwell's D looks. I think platinum as another "shiny" alternative has potential.

Still looks a bit off on a coin if you ask me, but I don't know how to place and/or scale it properly.

So far it's just the blue variant that's been submitted, so if nothing else is submitted soon I'll make a poll to decide between the b&w and the blue version.

I also posted a variation quite a while ago on bitcointalk https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=421615.msg6081393#msg6081393

I was under the impression that the competition winner would provide some variants too, is that not going ahead?

@NameUser A shiny "D" works on the coin but on the logo I'm not sure (scalability etc.). I agree for the colors but without changing the shape of the "D".

Ah, yours was the one I intended to refer to. The blue color caught my eye immediately and it stuck with me.

I also thought the winner would provide some variants.

@Kai I agree. That's what I meant by "shiny alternative". Like the designer showed in this design. I was just showing how the D would look different with less depth (thanks patrolman), and that I believe it doesn't fit good on a coin (the circle indicates it's on a coin). Excuse my Paint-like GIMP skills. :D

This will win me no friends, but that fat wide D looks terrible. I see a headless duck, or a coffee cup, or a stapling machine. Sorry I missed the voting!

I agree with this. The Ds certainly stand out more than the DRK coin design here and the other coins as well. I think the black stands out more but I don't think the logo should be left black. I think it is important to establish a colour scheme - as has been mentioned - to use with all promotional material. For me colour association is a powerful thing.

I love Bill Hicks and pretty much agree with the quote LimLims has posted a couple of times but I think the fact of the matter is that marketing is important. Much more important than I wish it were. In a perfect world Darkcoin would sell itself when DarkSend has been released, audited and the source code released, but people do not always react in ways we expect them to. It's important to understand that there are a lot of altcoins being released and most people don't have time to check out all that come out. In my opinion a definite colour scheme will help many people to recognise Darkcoin more easily

I don't think the new D works with a circle at all design-wise.
But don't worry, I fixed that! :D

(Joking.. Though it does work better than a circle.)

Actually, that triangle looks really pretty cool. Could I use the coin you made for my mining website?

Well put. I also think it's important to follow a color scheme for the reasons you state. Darkcoin is already different than any other coin out there, so why not also look different than them too?

@Enzwell He he, it does look better.

I think the logo looks much better on the coin if it's scaled down & placed to the left a bit so its "centre of gravity" is in the middle. Like this:
