DCG will discontinue support for DashCopay wallet

Dash community,

With great consideration, the DCG team has decided to discontinue support for the Copay wallet in order to focus maximum effort on on the DashPay wallet as well as enabling Evolution features for the existing Dash Wallet.

The original intent for the Dash Copay wallet was to become the first wallet with Evolution features. As we began working with the Copay code, we realized that it would not be able to support this goal and pivoted away from this approach. Nonetheless, we decided to push forward with releasing a beta version of Copay so Dash users could at least try out multisignature functionality.

We introduced the first Copay beta back in January. After some initial testing we determined we needed to do some additional work to improve the product. We released our second beta to testnet in late June, and enabled mainnet support in early August.

During this time, we observed limited interest in the Copay product. We collect minimal data on our mobile apps to protect the privacy of our users. However, based on the standard download and session data we do get from the app stores, not only were few users downloading the app (less than 200 for both iOS and Android), most users only had a handful of sessions (the median average sessions per day was 0.2). We also saw minimal chatter regarding Copay on our social media channels.

Dash Core Group is currently developing three other mobile wallets (the React Native DashPay wallet as well as the iOS and Android versions of Dash Wallet) in addition to the continued development of our core protocol, APIs, and libraries. At this time, given our desire to get Evolution out the door as effectively as possible, the team believes it is in the network’s best interest to prioritize the development of the DashPay wallet (aimed at acquiring new users) as well as the enablement of Evolution features for the substantial Dash Wallet user base over the continued development of Copay.

This decision was carefully considered by the team and is not related in any way to the recent security issue identified on the original Bitcoin Copay wallet. That issue did not impact the DashCopay wallet code.

That said, we welcome any interested development teams from the Dash community to contribute to Copay. The repository is open-source and available on Github here.

Thank you to all the testers who participated in the beta and provided feedback, and to the broader community for your continued support as we work our way towards Evolution.

Can you clarify whether the Dash Copay Android will become invalid as some users still have some fund in it?

They're telling you that it's currently unmaintained.
This means that as DASH advances, it may (almost certainly will) become incompatible with the rest of the network.
Also, any security issues or exploits discovered will likely not be rectified.
Get your money out of it at your earliest convenience.

(people using wallets on their not-so-smart phones don't take OpSec very seriously anyway, so...)

I don't like to come out of left field with unmentioned topics, but this one is omitted in a glaring fashion...

You sure this isn't related to budget cuts?

I was confused why the DASH CoPay thing ever existed in the first place, so I'm fine with it being orphaned.

...and, I welcome a trimming of the fat. This was a vestigial project from it's inception.

The fact that you've got a lot of bulky corporate bureaucrat mouths to feed, and not much left to feed them with, has nothing to do with it?

It kinda stands out.

I don't mind and understand the reasons why dash will no longer support dashcopay.
But i what I don't understand it why it took so long, it seems to me that dashcopay was a dead end early on or even before starting it.

As a side note the MyDashWallet Mobile versions (Android and iOS) utilize most of the same code (bitcore and copay) as well and will continue to use and improve the code (we got keystores, hd wallets, signing, InstantSend, PrivateSend, chatting, integration into tipping and might add more cool stuff later). When we find the time we plan to update the wallets to a new native experience later this month. Similar to the Dash Copay wallet the amount of users using the native Android/iOS app was very low (5-10% of the total users of MyDashWallet, most simply use the web version), but we think this might be because we didn't provide a full native experience yet and some features were missing.

Users of Dash Copay or other wallets with seeds or private keys can simply import into our app or in any of the other available Dash Wallets (just always make sure you have a backup available).

Hey there - I would suggest moving any funds currently in the Copay beta to another Dash wallet, at least until another dev team steps up to maintain it going forward. Your seed phrase will remain valid in other Dash wallets.

I wish we could support all platforms, but DashPay wallet and Evolution features do carry more value for the growth of the community. Thanks for the update!
